Renault has hinted at interest in competing in the World Rally Championship. The French marque - which runs in the Junior WRC with its Clio Super 1600 car - has admitted a move to the sport's top level could be on the cards with its new Logan saloon.
The budget car, which is being developed in Romania, is expected to be priced at 5000, and is aimed at countries with developing road networks. If Renault were to enter the WRC, it would be the third French manufacturer in the championship, competing against Citroen and Peugeot.
Renault group president Louis Schwetzer admitted on French television that the WRC could be the ideal championship in which to promote the new Logan. "I know that many collaborators of Renault think of such a project," he said. "According to them, this light and reliable car would make a very good car for the rally. Therefore, perhaps we can enter."
Renault has been a regular competitor over the years, but has yet to build a fully-fledged World Rally Car. Its previous cars have always been based around smaller models, such as the Renault 5 Alpine and Renault 5 Maxi and GT Turbos and the Renault Clio and Renault Megane.
